The LEGO Pikachu is arguably the most divisive entry in the debut 2026 Pokémon wave, pitched as the ultimate collector’s centrepiece but sparking fierce debate among adult fans of LEGO (AFOL) over the “LEGO fication” of organic characters.

Structurally, it’s a showcase and really fun to build with the family and even the neighbours children wanting to join the build of the characts which many have come to love.

Pickachu

Pikachu’s signature “leaping” pose is achieved through a Technic reinforced core anchored into a brick built grassy base, keeping the forward leaning model balanced.

The interchangeable tail—male flat edge or female heart notch—is a thoughtful nod to detail, while the life sized Poké Ball’s premium “pop and click” mechanism has earned praise.

But the face is the stumbling block. Unlike rival Mega, which leans on custom molded heads, LEGO insisted on a 100% brick built approach.

The result: stepped slopes around the cheeks and flat printed tiles for eyes that give Pikachu a robotic stare. Reviewers note the side angles impress, but front on the muzzle feels elongated, pushing the build into uncanny valley territory.

Price

Price is another flashpoint. At 2,050 pieces for R3,999, the set leans heavily on small yellow plates and 1×1 tiles, leaving the final model looking smaller than comparably priced sets like the Star Wars helmets or Botanical Collection.

While the piece count is high, the reliance on micro elements makes the build feel less substantial than collectors expect at this tier.

Verdict

Ultimately, it’s a love or hate proposition: either you admire the ingenuity of sculpting a curved mouse from square bricks, or you’ll wish for the smoother lines of Mega’s cheaper alternative.

For some, the engineering brilliance outweighs the aesthetic compromises; for others, the blocky stare and price to value ratio are deal breakers.

In the end, LEGO Pikachu is less about universal appeal and more about testing the boundaries of what brick built characters can achieve—an experiment destined to split the fanbase.
