Sony has unveiled the FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS, the newest addition to its premium G Master lens lineup for full-frame Alpha E-mount cameras. Aimed squarely at wildlife, sports, birding, and photojournalism creators, the lens combines long-range versatility with the optical quality Sony’s flagship glass is known for.

The standout feature is its constant F4.5 aperture across the entire zoom range — a significant advantage for photographers shooting fast-moving subjects in changing light conditions. Sony also claims autofocus performance up to three times faster than its predecessor, thanks to four XD Linear Motors and updated tracking algorithms.

Built for the demands of modern creators

Despite its super-telephoto reach, the lens weighs approximately 1.84kg and features an internal zoom design that maintains a stable center of gravity while shooting. That balance makes handheld operation more practical for extended sessions, particularly for sports and wildlife photographers constantly tracking movement.

Sony says the lens resolves sharp detail edge-to-edge throughout the full 100-400mm range, supported by an advanced optical setup featuring XA, Super ED, and ED glass elements designed to minimise chromatic and spherical aberrations. Nano AR Coating II also helps reduce flare and ghosting in difficult lighting environments.

The lens supports Sony’s Alpha 9 III burst shooting at up to 120fps with continuous autofocus and auto exposure tracking — a specification that positions it firmly in professional territory.

A lens designed for the field

Sony has also leaned into durability and usability. The FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS includes built-in stabilisation, focus hold buttons, breathing compensation support for video, and a dust- and moisture-resistant design for challenging outdoor environments.
