Africa in Frame Awards

Emerging photographers and content creators from across Africa are being given a new opportunity to showcase their work following the launch of the Africa in Frame Photo Awards, a continent-wide competition designed to celebrate the people, cultures and stories that define modern Africa.

Launched by Sony Middle East and Africa, the competition will run from 1 October to 31 December 2026 and is being positioned as the region’s first standalone photography initiative dedicated to African visual storytellers.

Entrants

The awards invite photographers to capture the essence of contemporary Africa, from its landscapes and wildlife to fashion, sport, weddings and cultural celebrations.

Organisers say the initiative aims to highlight the diversity of Africa’s visual identity while providing a dedicated platform for emerging creative talent.

Categories

Participants can enter the competition in one of three categories:

  • Wild Africa – Wildlife, conservation and landscape photography.
  • African Style & Spirit – Images celebrating African fashion, sport and contemporary identity.
  • Ceremony & Celebration – Weddings and cultural events that showcase traditions, communities and memorable moments.

The competition seeks to bring together creative voices from across the continent and encourage photographers to share uniquely African perspectives through their work.

Speaking at the launch, Jobin Joejoe, Managing Director of Sony Middle East and Africa, said the awards are intended to amplify African voices in global visual culture.

“Africa’s creative talent continues to shape global visual culture, and we are proud to create a dedicated platform where photographers across the continent can share their perspectives.”

Joejoe said photography remains one of the most powerful storytelling tools available.

“Photography has the power to tell stories, challenge perceptions and give people a new way of seeing the world. Through this competition, we want to celebrate the unique perspectives coming out of Africa while supporting emerging creators as they develop their craft and share their visual stories with a wider audience.”

Winners

Three winners will be selected following the judging process after entries close at the end of December.

Each winner will receive a Sony α7R VI camera paired with a FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM lens, providing access to professional imaging technology to help further develop their skills and careers.

The winners are expected to be announced in mid-February 2027.

Celebrating Africa

According to organisers, the initiative forms part of a broader effort to support Africa’s growing creative community and recognise the role photographers play in shaping perceptions of the continent both locally and internationally.
