In South Africa, where safety shapes almost every decision about travel, Uber says its technology and accountability measures are designed to protect riders and drivers before, during, and after every trip.

The e-hailing company said safety begins long before a car arrives.

Criminal checks

It said drivers undergo criminal background checks, driving assessments, and vehicle inspections before joining the platform.

“Drivers must regularly verify their identity through live selfie checks, while vehicles are subject to ongoing inspections to remain active,” Uber explained.

“Riders also face identity verification, adding another layer of accountability before a trip is matched.”

Uber app

Uber said once a ride is requested, the app provides the driver’s name, photo, vehicle details, and licence plate to help riders confirm they are entering the correct car.

“For added assurance, Uber offers PIN Verification, requiring drivers to enter a unique four‑digit code before a trip begins.”

Features

Uber added that during trips, several features operate automatically. RideCheck uses GPS and sensor data to detect unusual events, prompting riders and drivers with options to access help.

It said seat belt reminders reinforce safe habits, while audio recording and dash cam options provide objective records in case of disputes.

“For peace of mind, Share My Trip lets riders send live journey updates to friends or family, while Trusted Contacts automatically shares trip details with up to five designated people.

“Drivers benefit from protections too, including the two‑way rating system, anonymised contact details, mandatory driving hour limits, and speed alerts,” Uber said.

Urgent situations

In urgent situations, the Emergency Assistance button connects users to AURA’s control room, enabling rapid dispatch of private security or medical responders using live location data.

Uber said it’s Economic Impact Report highlights why these safeguards matter: 83% of women cite safety as their primary reason for using Uber, while 81% say it is the safest way home after dark.

“Safety is ultimately a shared responsibility,” Uber said. “By using available tools, reporting concerns, and providing feedback, riders and drivers together help build safer mobility across South Africa.”
