Gungubele pushes industry partnerships to position SA as Africa’s Digital Hub

Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Mondli Gungubele has robust discussions that underscore the government’s push to strengthen collaboration with industry, accelerate digital inclusion, and secure South Africa’s place as a strategic hub in the African digital economy.

Gungubele received official invitations to Huawei Technologies South Africa’s Office Park in Woodmead and to AM Hengtong Africa Telecoms (AHMT)’s fibre-optic cable manufacturing facility in Kempton Park.

Discussions

Discussions ranged from ICT priorities and technology transfer to transformative projects like the PEACE Cable system, with both Huawei and AMHT reaffirming their commitment to innovation, competitiveness, and the long term implementation of the National Digital Economy Masterplan.

The Communications and Digital Technologies Department said the engagements present valuable opportunities to strengthen collaboration between government and industry, to discuss current ICT priorities, explore advancements in digital infrastructure, local manufacturing, and technology transfer.

Huawei CEO

During the Huawei engagement, the Deputy Minister also met with Huawei Enterprise South Africa’s newly appointed CEO, Mr. Kui Zheng.

Discussions with AMHT further explored the role of transformative projects such as the PEACE Cable system in expanding international connectivity and positioning South Africa as a strategic digital hub on the African continent.

“Partnerships like these are critical in fostering innovation, accelerating digital inclusion, and driving the implementation of the National Digital Economy Masterplan towards building a connected and inclusive digital society,” the department said.

Huawei launch

Meanwhile, after the “Now Is Your Run,” launch event in Madrid, Spain, Huawei is coming back to global consumers with the “Now is your Spark” launch event on 7 May in Bangkok, Thailand, where it will unveil various new devices – from a pocket-friendly phone to a flagship tablet and the next-gen sports wearable.

Huawei dropped a video teaser on X announcing launch event for the overseas markets and pointed out a few devices coming to the global platform.

While the company will reveal more about the new products in the next few days, there are reports the company will unveil the new the Watch Fit 5 Series and new smartphones.
