MSC Cruises has confirmed the return of MSC Sinfonia to South African waters for the 2027/2028 season, with 32 sailings scheduled from Durban and Cape Town — a move that underscores the growing appetite for regional cruise tourism but also raises questions about affordability and access.
The season begins on 12 November 2027 from Durban’s Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal, with itineraries ranging from three to twelve nights. Destinations include Pomene, Maputo and Portuguese Island in Mozambique, Walvis Bay in Namibia, and the popular New Year’s cruise to Mauritius and Reunion.
Sailings
After the festive voyage, the ship will reposition to Cape Town in January 2028 for Namibia sailings before returning to Durban to close the season.
Ross Volk, Managing Director of MSC Cruises South Africa, said the decision reflects strong demand.
“MSC Sinfonia has had much success in South Africa, and we are confident that guests will be very happy with what this vessel has to offer. We are mindful of the preferences of the South African traveller, and Sinfonia is one of the ships best suited to the local market.”
13 decks
The 13‑deck vessel, part of MSC’s Lirica class, carries just over 2,500 passengers in 976 cabins. Facilities include six bars and lounges, four dining venues, two swimming pools, a casino, theatre, disco, and a shopping area.
Families are catered for with a spray park and clubs for children and teens, while adults can access the Aurea Spa and Technogym fitness centre.

Beyond leisure
Beyond leisure, MSC Sinfonia also offers conference and event facilities, accommodating up to 550 delegates — positioning the ship as a venue for corporate gatherings.
Destination highlights include Portuguese Island’s unspoiled beaches, Maputo’s historic architecture, Pomene’s marine reserve, La Possession’s volcanic landscapes, and Walvis Bay’s lagoon teeming with flamingos and pelicans.
Tourism
With cruise tourism expanding, MSC’s announcement signals confidence in the South African market. But as Volk noted, the challenge remains balancing luxury with accessibility.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone onboard in 2027 for what promises to be another successful season,” Volk said.
