Huawei has taken a decisive step back into the global flagship arena with the introduction of its new Pura 90s Series, unveiled during a high-profile event at Dubai’s Museum of the Future on Thursday, 16 July 2026.

The launch marks a renewed international push for the company, which has spent recent years rebuilding momentum in the premium smartphone segment after a period of constrained global competitiveness.

Refresh

The Pura 90s Series arrives as part of a broader refresh of Huawei’s 2026 product ecosystem. Alongside the smartphones, the company showcased the new MatePad Air tablet—recently launched in Malaysia—as well as updated MatePad 11.5 S models and the FreeClip 2 S earbuds.

Together, these devices form a cohesive suite designed to strengthen Huawei’s multi-device experience, a strategy the company continues to emphasise across its global markets.

At the centre of the announcement are the Pura 90s Pro and the Pura 90s Pro Max, two devices crafted to highlight Huawei’s strengths in imaging, industrial design and AI-driven performance.

Cameras

The Pro Max stands out with a headline-grabbing camera system: a 200MP periscope telephoto lens paired with a 50MP main sensor featuring Huawei’s variable aperture technology (f/1.4–f/4.0).

This combination allows the device to capture detailed portraits, expansive night scenes and high-dynamic-range images with notable clarity. Huawei has also refined colour accuracy through its latest imaging engine, positioning the Pura 90s Series as one of the most photography-focused offerings in the current flagship market.

Both models feature 120Hz LTPO OLED displays, IP68/IP69 durability ratings and large batteries supported by ultra-fast wired and wireless charging.

Display

The Pro Max’s 6.9-inch display offers a generous viewing experience, while adaptive refresh rates help balance performance and power efficiency.

The design language across the series leans toward modern flat-edge aesthetics, giving the devices a clean, premium feel that aligns with current industry trends.

Despite the hardware strengths, Huawei’s familiar software limitation remains. International versions of the Pura 90s Series continue to ship without Google Mobile Services, relying instead on Huawei’s AppGallery and alternative app frameworks.

Google

For users deeply integrated into Google’s ecosystem, this remains a significant consideration and may influence purchasing decisions regardless of the hardware improvements.

Huawei maintains that its app ecosystem continues to expand, but the absence of native Google support remains the brand’s most persistent global challenge.

Ecosystem

The Dubai launch also served as a platform for Huawei to highlight the growing maturity of its ecosystem. The company emphasised seamless cross-device integration between smartphones, tablets, wearables and audio products—an area where Huawei has invested heavily in recent years.

This unified experience is one of the brand’s strongest differentiators, particularly in markets where consumers value multi-device connectivity and continuity.

Design plays a prominent role in the Pura 90s Pro. The device is available in four colour options inspired by natural tones: Guava Pink, Coco White, Orange Spark and Mulberry Black.

Pricing and availability

These finishes give the Pro model a distinctive visual identity compared to the more understated Pro Max, offering consumers a more expressive aesthetic choice.

South African pricing and availability for the Pura 90s Series have not yet been announced.
